An Authentic Mid Century Modern Paint Palette
By Marie C.
This week’s mid mod paint color palette celebrates the fantastic peacock colors that were a popular trend in both fashion and decor in 1961 (and throughout the 1960s). But first, let’s set the tone:
The year is 1961, The Cold War is in full gear and it’s an exciting and tumultuous year. John F. Kennedy is the handsome new president and America is falling in love with his glamorous first lady, Jackie.
Yuri Gagarin, a Russian astronaut, is the first human in space. Less than a month later, Alan Shepard is the first American to be launched in space. Russia, America’s Cold War enemy, is always one step ahead in the space race. President Kennedy vows that America will have a man on the moon before the end of the decade. American pride is on the line.
Construction is started on the Berlin Wall, and the infamous (and failed) Bay Of Pigs invasion happens. Castro remains in power as every attempt made by the CIA to assassinate him fails and The Doomsday Clock is 7 minutes from midnight. But Cold War tensions don’t keep Americans from enjoying great music, fashion and fun. Mister Ed is a new TV show and The Twilight Zone viewers are introduced to little Anthony Fremont and his infamous cornfield. Breakfast At Tiffany’s was playing at the local theater. Bee hive hair styles were popular and so was Aquanet. The Oldsmobile Cutlass was introduced and when you tuned it’s radio dial you might hear the rocking sound of Chubby Checker’s “Lets Twist Again”, Del Shannon’s classic “Runaway” or Patsy Cline’s heartbreaking “I Fall To Pieces”
New family homes are usually ranch style and are often filled with furniture and decor that is influenced by Scandinavian design, the atomic age and the space race. Interiors are both wood paneled and colorful, which brings us to the subject of this blog post; Mid Mod 1961 Peacock Paint Palette.
Our authentic 1961 Peacock color palette is matched to Prestige brand interior paint. If you’ve read my last blog post, you know I can be a little obsessive about authenticity. I certainly love the the challenge of examining vintage photos of mid century interiors and recreating the look and feel so that it is as close to the original as can be accomplished. Authentic colors play an important part in the process. Of course, it’s vital to be able to match those colors to currently available paint. I came to this idea in the last year, on my vacation on Koh Samui, in beautiful villa of YourKohSamuiVillas. Relaxed in beautiful surrounding, I became very creative. Several years ago, I actually had the unique experience of finding a can of robin’s egg blue paint dating from the 1960s at an estate sale. Astoundingly, it was still liquid so I used it to paint my bathroom, which I was in the middle of restoring. It looked beautiful next to the vintage blue ceramic tile trim I had just added to the room and I was thrilled. Unfortunately, it never dried! What a mess! Lesson learned; when it comes to paint, true vintage is not as good as vintage looking new. We are all lucky that paint companies seem to be very aware of consumer desire for retro colors.
The 1961 mid mod peacock paint palette can also serve as reference when purchasing drapes, bedding, upholstery and floor coverings. As in our Mid Mod Ranch palette (see previous blog post), we have included the paint name along with the color hex code. The color hex code can be used to create matching items on Zazzle and other make on demand sites that allow customers to customize items with color hex codes. That opens up a host of coordination possibilities, from lamp shades to shower curtains.
Now for a little inspiration! Some of the images below date from 1961, some from later in the 1960s, but all feature the beautiful peacock blues and greens:
