For as long as I can remember I’ve been in love with mid-century modern design and colors, a love fostered by childhood visits to my grandmother’s coastal California ranch house which was built by my grandfather in the late 1950s. The living room had wonderful, light pink stained wood-paneled walls adorned with metal seagulls and there was an aqua couch with encased in a very uncomfortable protective plastic cover that squeaked every time I sat down on it. The kitchen counter was white with pink and grey boomerangs and there were aqua and pink breakfast stools. The guest bedroom had forest green walls and pink and green floral bedspreads, a green vanity table with a huge round mirror. A night spent in that house felt like a trip back in time and I learned how important those original 1950s colors were to this experience.
When I was old enough, I started collecting 1950’s and 1960s interior design books and old Sunset magazines (cheap and easy to find in the 1970’s-1980’s) and studied every detail. I was totally hooked. Then I took it to the next level and started restoring a bathroom that was added to my family’s 1920s home in the 1950s. The bathroom had fantastic pink porcelain fixtures that I was able to date to 1958 but the refrigerator white walls and 1970’s navy floor tile were killing the vintage vibe so I scraped the stucco walls until I got down to the first layer of paint which was a peach tinted fawn color, took some chips of it to the local paint store and found a good match. My mother and I painted the room, put down beige floor tiles and hung beige and peach towels. It was transformed into a warm, mid-century modern bathroom simply by identifying and applying authentic colors. Matching old mid-century colors to currently available paint has since become a hobby of mine,
I’ll be posting authentic mid-century modern (1940’s-1960’s) color palettes, to the midmoddecor.com blog from time to time for you to use for reference. They will be matched to major brand name paint, currently available in DIY and paint stores. I’ve included to color hex code for each paint color because you can take that code and create matching items on Zazzle, like lamps, throw pillows and even fabric that can be made into curtains and tablecloths.
Sherwin Williams paint has a great range of old school colors so I matched the original colors to their paint swatches. Having said that, our first color palette is 1950’s authentic and we call it:
“Retro Ranch” (Sherwin Williams Paint)
As you can see from the original 1950s paint ad (below), several of our Retro Ranch palette colors are very similar. The rest are also authentic, matched to vintage paint, upholstery and appliances.
You can see the colors in the Retro Ranch Palette and similar colors in the inspiration gallery images (below). All images are from the 1950s and 1960s and are from print ads, interior decorating books and catalogs.
